I often have people coming to me saying they are trying to get pregnant. But they’ve been trying for a while and it’s taking too long! I sometimes hear an unspoken assumption that if they do all the right things – like there’s a checklist – then it is inevitable that they will fall pregnant. But fertility needs to be placed in the context of the individuals, and the couple. It is not a mechanistic process but deserves awe at the mystery of creation. Regardless of all the modern advances and knowledge, no one has the ability to give ‘Life’. It is not susceptible to force and control. If you could get pregnant using logic and reason, I’m sure it would be done, but fertility is not of the sphere of the mind.
There are so many aspects that can affect fertility. Relevant education about the menstrual cycle and timing are imperative. Beyond this there might be physical and hormonal complications that are problematic. But it could be simple lifestyle habits are not optimised for fertility e.g. adequate sleep, healthy eating, regular ‘moderate’ exercise. Additionally what I’ve found is that people are less inspired to consider how they think and feel about being pregnant. What they really feel and think about having a family and the kind of parent they would be. But these can be unseen, immeasurable ways that affect the process of conception.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the process and not quite sure why?
Do you want a baby but want to maintain your lifestyle?
Do you not want to be like your parents?
Do you feel betrayed by your body?
Are you losing hope?
If you find yourself in a position of trying to conceive and it’s been at least six months, it’s a good idea to get your fertility checked after you have optimised your lifestyle. This doesn’t mean that there will be problems or that assisted reproduction such as IVF is the only option. But it is important to know if there is something physical that needs to be addressed. At the same time it’s possible to look at thoughts and emotions that are strong or recurring in relationship to your fertility. What stands in the way of your dream for a family coming true?
